How to Follow a Diet for Candida

If you’ve ended up on this page, you’ve heard of Candida before. The first time I ever heard anything about someone following a diet for Candida I was in massage school. One of my classmates was on a yeast free diet to get rid of her Candida overgrowth problem. I had no idea what she was talking about so I asked lots of questions. When I got home I looked up more about it online.

Candida albicans is the yeast that naturally grows in our digestive tracts. Our digestive tracts are actually teeming with life. We host a lot of little micro-organisms in there. The yeast in our systems is normally kept under control by friendly bacteria that lives in our gut. Occasionally, this system can become out of whack though. When our gut bacteria is killed off by antibiotics or other medication, by illness, or even injury the yeast is allowed to take over and start growing out of control.

Out of control yeast may not seem that bad at first but let me tell you, it’s no walk in the park. Candida doesn’t just cause digestive problems. It can lead to yeast infections, joint and muscles pain, headaches, fatigue and even autoimmune diseases. That’s why you need to do something about it. If left untreated the yeast will continue to grow. They won’t stop on their own.

When following a Candida diet you’re trying to starve the Candida so you need to avoid eating foods that yeast like. Here are some simple tips to get you started.

Sugar

Yeasts love sugar. It really makes them happy. That’s why you can’t have any on this diet. Avoid all sugar, this includes white sugar, powdered sugar, raw sugar, and brown sugar. You also need to avoid high fructose corn syrup, agave nectar, honey, and maple syrup.

Fruit contains a lot of sugar. There are a few fruits you can eat but steer clear of the super sweet fruits. Bananas, oranges, and all dried fruits must be avoided.

Simple Carbohydrates

You also need to avoid simple carbohydrates on this diet because when you eat simple carbs they turn into sugar as soon as they hit your bloodstream. Eat nothing containing white flour. Avoid white rice and pasta. Keep you consumption of starchy root vegetables to a minimum. Eat vegetables like potatoes and carrots no more than once a week. Even less than that would be good if you can manage.

Yeasty Foods

Foods containing yeast are a big no no on this diet. You need to avoid all of them. Don’t eat bread or pizza or pastries. Yeast can also be found in fermented foods. Don’t eat any store bought fermented foods like vinegar, pickles and sauerkraut. All foods containing vinegar must be avoided. Most condiments like ketchup, barbecue sauce, relish, steak sauce and salad dressings contain vinegar.

Other yeasty foods include smoke and cured meats and peanuts and pistachios. You should also avoid all mushrooms.

Dairy

Like simple carbs dairy contains sugars that yeasts love. It is wise to avoid diary on this diet. You can eat live bacteria containing yogurt though to help bring balance to the digestive tract.
